Queens of the Stone Age to unleash new album in 2017

on January 11, 2017, 1:20am

You can add Queens of the Stone Age to the list of anticipated albums for 2017. Josh Homme and Co. will return this year with the follow-up to 2013’s …Like Clockwork.

The news comes courtesy of Mastodon’s Troy Sanders, who recently formed the band Gone Is Gone with QOTSA’s Troy Van Leeuwen. Asked how he and his bandmates juggle their various projects, Sanders let it slip that QOTSA have a new album coming this year.

“I like to think none of us needs this band, but we all really want this band. When that’s the mentality, this is special to the four of us,” Sanders explained in an interview with Rolling Stone. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t dedicate the first week of 2017 to working on this band. For example, Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon and At the Drive-In have all been recording, and we all have new records coming out this year. We’ve all been extremely busy writing and recording, and we’re about to get super busy touring the world. So I believe we’re all fulfilled to a certain degree with all we have going on.”

During a summertime appearance on the Let There Be Talk podcast, Homme revealed that QOTSA was “next on his schedule,” adding, “Same lineup, we’re locked in.” Subsequently, Van Leeuwen said the band planned to hit the studio before year’s end. However, this is the first we’ve heard of a release coming in 2017.

Below, watch footage of QOTSA performing “Song For the Dead” at a surprise concert held in LA in September 2015.
