Synthpop duo Retail Space are ready to start anew on new song “Blue Jeans” — listen

on January 17, 2017, 11:45am

While fate sometimes works in mysterious ways, other times it can be as straightforward as landing right in your lap. That’s exactly what happened to Isabelle Burnet, a Brooklyn-based musician and one half of the indie pop duo Retail Space. After many an afternoon spent mulling over the idea of ditching her job to fully pursue Retail Space, a sign was passed down by the powers that be — one that would not only reaffirm her dedication to the band, but also result in a brand new song.

“One day while on break I stumbled upon a Casio CT-310 on the chuck out and after lugging it home, [Retail Space’s] Jacob [Rosse] and I started writing the beginning keyboard riff to ‘Blue Jeans'”, Burnet tells Consequence of Sound. “Taking it as a sign, we wrote ‘Blue Jeans’ about breaking up with your old life and starting a new one.”

The fateful track is an alluring and fluid listen, not unlike the serendipity that struck Retail Space that day. “I’m drifting, floating, swaying, side-to-side,” a vocally lithe Burnet can be heard singing, sounding ready and able to welcome whatever fresh opportunities come her way. Hear it in full below.

“Blue Jeans” is taken from Retail Space’s upcoming sophomore album, You Can Catch A Lobster With Eggs But Not Egg Salad, due out February 10th.
