J.K. Rowling trolls Trump supporters burning her books and films: “I’ve still got your money”

on February 01, 2017, 6:10pm

J.K. Rowling has never been one to shy away from expressing her opinions on Twitter. Like many other public figures, the Harry Potter author’s latest sense of umbrage (zing) originates from President Donald Trump’s much derided immigration ban.

Over the weekend, Rowling began firing shots at Trump’s administration, comparing the executive order to the policies of dictatorships and calling out Vice President Mike Pence for his hypocrisy. She also sent out encouragement to the dissenting population via the words of Winston Churchill.

Quickly, fans who disagreed with Rowling’s stance started calling for the Harry Potter book burnings Christian groups used to hold in the late-’90s and early-’00s. Rowling’s retorts were more incendio than aquamenti, however. “Guess it’s true what they say,” she replied to one “disgusted” ex-fan, “you can lead a girl to books about the rise and fall of an autocrat, but you still can’t make her think.” What’s the spell equivalent of “sick burn”?

Other fans have been content to simply toss a bunch of hexes and curses her way, but the original wand-wielder launched a few well-played protego charms in defense.

Maybe the political resistance to the Trump agenda should start calling itself Rowling’s Army.
