09. BJ the Chicago Kid – “Roses”

If you haven’t figured it out by now, Chicago is the nation’s cradle of hip-hop. The buck didn’t stop with Yeezy, as evidenced by Chance’s meteoric rise, and to be frank, there’s been a long line trailing behind both of them. One name you shouldn’t scroll past is BJ the Chicago Kid, but odds are you already know that. After all, the guy became ubiquitous this past January when he sang the national anthem at Obama’s farewell address, and what’s more, he’s already gone through the motions of losing a couple of Grammys. No, he’s on his way up, and although he’s only a year removed from his last album — In My Mind — he returned for Valentine’s Day with the appropriately titled “Roses”. It’s sultry, it’s sensual, and it’s a total jam. “Roses, pretty red/ She love to keep me going/ Playing with my head/ But a nigga in love with it,” he sings over instrumentals straight out of the ’90s. Oh yeah, this is exactly what belongs at the top of a “Let’s Do This” mixtape. Not that this writer has made any of those in recent memory, but hey … McWorld. –Michael Roffman
