Hulu has unveiled the first look at its upcoming adaption of Catch-22 from George Clooney. Based on the classic satirical novel from Joseph Heller, the six-episode limited series premieres May 17th.

Clooney executive produced the series and directed two of its episodes. He also appears on camera as training commander Scheisskopf, marking his first TV role since E.R. in the late 1990s. Clooney stars alongside Friday Night Lights’ own Kyle Chandler as well as Hugh Laurie, Christopher Abbott, Grant Heslov, Austin Stowell, and Tessa Ferrer.

Catch-22 tells the fictional story of Yossarian (Abbott), a U.S. Army Air Force B-25 bombardier trying to fulfill his service requirements so he can return home from World War 2. Chandler plays Colonel Cathcart, the group commander who relentlessly raises the number of missions the men have to fly to complete a tour of duty. When Yossarian and his fellow airmen attempt to avoid these dangerous missions, they find themselves in violation of regulation 22; a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty. Hence, the catch 22.

Catch-22 was previously adapted into a 1970 feature film starring Alan Arkin, Bob Balaban, Jack Gilford, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, and Orson Welles.
