Masterpiece Reviews: “Kanye West – Late Registration”

on August 18, 2015, 5:05pm

Welcome to the latest edition of Masterpiece Reviews. Once again, we’ve thrown on our favorite velvet robe, turned up the fire, and are here to regale you with stories of the greatest and most classic albums of all time. It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.

In honor of its 10th anniversary, this week’s episode looks back on the sophomore release from Kanye West, Late Registration. Following his chart-topping debut The College Dropout, the ever ambitious rapper-producer embarked on an entirely different direction by collaborating with film composer Jon Brion and utilizing styles and sounds not usually affiliated with hip-hop. With cameos from Jay Z, Jamie Foxx, Nas, and others, the album tackled a range of issues including poverty, blood diamonds, and drug trafficking. Late Registration became the biggest selling record of 2005 and another gem in Kanye’s glistening catalog.
